Fault tolerant multi-disk recording with automatic file recovery ensures that you deliver every bit of recorded audio even up to the point of an unexpected power failure. As an extra precaution, power switches automatically from external to internal in the case of external power loss.
The Deva 5.8 has three internal recording mediums ensuring you can always have a copy of your recorded audio on set, allowing Production to instantly reference previous recordings. Disputes with Post regarding recording issues can be immediately cleared up and extra copies of recorded audio can be produced in the case of lost, damaged or stolen material.
The Deva 5.8 is small and light enough to be comfortable in over-the-shoulder applications. The display, controls and 8 hardware faders are mounted on the top of the unit, making over-the-shoulder and cart use convenient.
The color touchscreen makes the Deva the most intuitive and powerful recorder available. It is the most intuitive and flexible method to control a location recorder. Large high-resolution color meters provide a precise indication of recording levels not available on any other recorder.
With pre-record, you’ll never miss the start of a take; it allows for up to 10 seconds of audio to be recorded before the record button is pressed. Timecode is automatically recalculated to assure sub-frame accuracy.
Deva offers direct Avid™ and ProTools™ compatibility, saving a tremendous amount of time loading files in Post Production.
Scene, take, note and roll number metadata can be entered using the color touchscreen display, the Deva Mix-12 or an external PS2 keyboard. This data becomes part of the file and is automatically imported into the Avid Post Production system. All metadata is easily edited on the Deva to insure Post gets the correct info for each take.
Circle takes and false starts can be quickly noted with dedicated hardware keys.
An infinitely flexible internal 16-input and 20-bus digital mixer is a must for surround recording. Analog input limiters provide protection against harsh digital clipping.
Each channel on the Deva 5.8 is equipped with EQ, notch filter, compressor and delay.
The Deva incorporates the necessary phase coherent digital mixing and fader master capability to successfully record surround in the field. 3D sound reproduction is very dependent on time, phase and amplitude. A surround microphone and the Deva is all that is necessary to capture the audio world in 3D.
Flexible headphone monitoring including M/S matrix, numerous factory presets, personal presets and a Soundfield™ Decoder let you listen to what you need to hear.
Each of the 8 digital outputs can be individually switched between output bus configuration and direct digital out. The direct digital outputs allow input channels to be seamlessly routed to feed external backup recorders.
This powerful eight-input, eight-track digital audio recorder is designed for production sound with superb audio quality. Its eight full-featured inputs accept either microphone or line-level signals, provide 48V phantom power for condenser microphones, and offer peak limiters for microphone inputs and fully adjustable high-pass filters. Extensive routing flexibility allows each input to be routed to mixed tracks or to isolated tracks.
The unit has three options for recording media: internal 160 GB SATA hard drive, CompactFlash media with UDMA support, or an external FireWire hard drive or DVD-RAM (with bus powering). Any or all of these can be used simultaneously. Additionally, when connected to Mac OS or Windows computers with high-speed USB or FireWire 400/800, the 788T functions as a high-speed mass storage device.
To simplify interconnection with mixers and cameras with AES3 connectivity, the 788T has eight channels of balanced AES3 digital input and six channels of balanced AES3 output. It can be clocked from external word clock or from video sync, has a high-accuracy time code reader/generator on board, and includes auto-record features to chase external rec-run video sources. To simplify metadata entry, the 788T accepts USB keyboards, and keyboard shortcuts can be programmed to control menu items and machine transport, simplifying any production sound setup.

The new Fostex FR-2 has been designed specifically for location sound recording; high quality sound effects acquisition; TV & radio documentary; in fact any application where quality audio recording is required.
With excellent quality (up to 24-bit / 192KHz recording – a first for a CF recorder), huge feature list and a cost-effective price point, the FR-2 offers users of portable DAT and other formats the opportunity to make the switch to a more flexible, higher quality audio acquisition machine without sacrificing features.
Excellent Audio Compatibility
In adopting the BWF Broadcast WAV file format, the FR-2 offers what is now the most popular choice for professional recording. It can be set to record mono or stereo files with 16 or 24-bit quantisation over a vast range of frequencies from 22.05kHz for extended recording time up to 192kHz for the highest quality audio acquisition. Transferring files for editing and/or backup is fast and simple via a Compact Flash reader attached to a computer; a PCMCIA slot and/or a CF adaptor – ideal for those editing with a laptop; or indeed the on-board USB port.
Professional Features
The FR-2 incorporates a number of features developed through Fostex’s work in location DVD-RAM recording with the PD-6 and DV40.
Automated file/take naming speeds up time spent naming files between takes on location and complies with both US and Euro clapper board standards. In addition, the inclusion of a ‘pre-record’ buffer (user adjustable) means there should never be another missed take or lost soundbite!
Timecode
The FR-2 can be retrofitted with an optional, fully featured timecode card offering both reader and generator thus turning it into the ideal production and location recorder, whether it be used as a master or backup machine.
All Bases Covered
Excellent audio integrity, fully flexible recording, top quality mic amps, extensive interfacing plus optional timecode prove the Fostex FR-2 has all bases covered.
The Cantar-X offers the largest display surface of all portable recorders, which simultaneously shows every critical recording parameter.
The custom designed high contrast displays remain viewable under bright light (sun, sand, sea, snow, storm), and at very low temperatures too.
The swiveling front panel always provides the best viewing angle for both on cart and over the shoulder work.
The large twelve position MainSelector eliminates diving into numerous sub-menus.
The unique three-crown turret gives instant access to all recording and monitoring configurations, even while wearing heavy winter gloves.
Nine rotary faders (analog inputs) plus six linear faders (mixdown), each entirely devoted to one specific task, are faster to handle than multi-function knobs.
An important consideration for those who work in deserts and on the high seas, all of the mechanical actuators (faders, sliders, selectors) are sandproof and waterproof.
To complement the waterproof design, all audio socketsare pointed toward Earth, the same direction that rain falls. This concept has the subsidiary advantage that no plugs are protruding from the sides; this allows third party designers to build very narrow ‘Made for Cantar’ carts!
Unsurpassed mic preamps
The fame of the Cantar Sound is based on Aatons expertise with audio signal processing. First, the five mic inputs are equipped with the highest quality impedance transformers.
Second, Aaton developed huge dynamic range three stage proprietary preamplifiers to eliminate cumbersome trims.
Third, the powerful and smooth analog limiters achieve an impossible task: they are almost transparent to background sounds.
Built-in ‘B-Format’ stereo monitoring
Cantar is the only on-location digital recorder allowing stereo monitoring of the complete Soundfield B-Format (which includes 5.1) with no extra accessories. Thanks to its on-board mixer sliders, it is easy to dynamically adjust the ‘space’ parameters: pattern, width and rotation. And since the gain of the Mic/Line preamplifiers can be aligned to a half dB, and then ganged to a master fader, Cantar insures total control over later B-format treatments.
Long recording hours
Gunnar Arnason on “Cold Trail” says ‘Cantar was made for Iceland’.
The power consumption of a portable recorder is a potentially stressful issue on location. Cantar goes well beyond the two hour autonomy of other machines; with Li-Ion batteries, it can perform for up to sixteen hours.
Audio post compatibility
The Cantar ‘WorkDay’ file structure eliminates the dreaded disk-partition confusion and makes Post Production file handling much easier. The mixdown generated by the built-in mixer is treated separately from the primary channels and can be backed-up on tracks 1&2. Full details are in ‘The Post Chain’ at: http://www.aaton.com/documentation/.
Special Features
Cantar is able to simultaneously record the same audio files on both the internal and external hard drives.
Save your “Cantar Configurations” in a laptop. Next time you rent a Cantar, you can load them in the new machine, allowing you to pick up where you previously left off.
No wait in powering-up Cantar up: a cold-start from ZERO power to ‘REC’ can be executed in less than five seconds.
The track-names (actors’ name) can be entered from either a PS2 keyboard or directly with the Cantar jog.
While entering a ‘Differential Delay’ (up to 85 milliseconds) between two audio sources, you can fine tune it by listening to the tracks in left/righ ears ‘double-solo’.
